Re-Pair

Date: 2020
Engine: Unity
Genre: Twin stick – Shooter
Re-Pair is a bullet hell – twin stick – shooter, where you are fighting a scary looking enemy as a small blue character. The game was made during the Global Game Jam 2020 under the topic of “repair”. I worked alone during the Game Jam to meet the challenge of creating a game as finished as possible in a short period of time and also to get some further knowledge aside from programming.
Players can move the character and determine the direction in which they fire projectiles. They also are able to perform a short dash to better avoid the enemy shots. If the player is pushed too hard into a corner, they can trigger a bomb that destroys all of the enemy’s projectiles and prevents further attacks from the enemy for two seconds. Players have two of these bombs and has a certain cooldown before he can detonate the second one. The goal of the game is to defeat the opponent without being defeated yourself.

According to the theme of the Game Jam (repair), you are not killing the enemy by bringing its life points to zero, but by healing/repairing him. I wanted to show how the “Good” defeats or heals the “Evil” in the World (hence the world map as the background). At the end, you don’t defeat the “Evil”, but merge with it. By that, I wanted to show that there isn’t just “Good” and “Evil”, white and black, blue and red. Instead there are rather complicated, grey or purple things. I worked alone during the Game Jam, so I could only convey my message accordingly to the time restriction and team size.

Since I had already worked alone at the Franken Jam 2019, I was able to avoid some mistakes at the Global Game Jam 2020, especially in task and time management and I think that these skills are also very useful when working in larger teams. Apart from the progress I made in drawing 2D sprites, I also managed to organize my code better. I gained new knowledge at this Game Jam, mainly from the timeline package of Unity.
