Founded in 1991, Ulisses Spiele is a role-playing game publisher based in Waldems-Steinfischbach, Hesse, and is the rights holder for a large number of pen & paper role-playing game systems. The “The Black Eye” rulebook is particularly well known, providing the basis for many adventures in the fictional game world of “Dere” and especially on the continent of “Aventuria”.
Ulisses Spiele is also active in the digital realm and offers virtual tabletops, for example, so that the various role-playing games can also be played online. With “Forgotten Fables: Wolves on the Westwind” (Steam) from 2022 and Hexxen: Hunters (Steam), which will be released soon, Ulisses Spiele also has some computer games in its repertoire.
“The Black Cat” is a pen & paper role-playing game system from Ulisses Spiele, which shares its world with the successful pen & paper role-playing game system “The Black Eye”. The focus is on “awakened” cats who put on their clothes after darkness falls and set off on new adventures with their weapons. The project “The Black Cat” is a digital realization of this idea in the form of a 3D action adventure. The game was supported by the German computer game funding (BMWK – Games-Projekt – Die Schwarze Katze (DSKA)).
For a period of eleven months, I was involved in the project as a working student, which was also my first real job in the games industry. During this time, I was able to gain a lot of new experience and expand my knowledge considerably. My activities covered various areas, whereby I worked particularly intensive on the development of the enemy AIs. In addition, I developed a visual tool in Unity to simplify the editing of the statemachines on which the AIs are based. As a result, I have dealt extensively with the tool development and the specific characteristics of Unity in this area.
The project is currently not being developed further and is looking for a publisher and financial backer in order to further develop the solid foundation and create more content.
