Kusarigama

Date: 2018 – 2020
Engine: Unity
Genre: Action Adventure
Kusarigama is an Action – Adventure – Game where you control your character in the 3rd – person view through a stylized 3D – world with Asian flair. You have to fight your way through corrupted enemies using your trusty weapon “Kusarigama”, to find a way to heal said corruption.
The game represents my final project for my media science bachelor degree. On this project I worked together with Stephanie Dietzel, who was responsible for creating all the 3D and 2D art for the Game.

The focus of the game is the combat system. At first, you can only defend yourself against the animals that have mutated into monsters with close combat attacks. You can perform combinations of attacks, and as the game progresses, you also gain the ability to defeat your opponents with ranged and area attacks. The controls are based on other titles of the genre, allowing you can target your opponents and evade their attacks.

The goal of the game is to first obtain all the upgrades of your weapon to unlock the full potential of the combat system and to be able to face the dangers of the game world better. You also need to find the six key fragments in the game world to get to the healing source and cure the plague.
As already stated, Kusarigama represents my final project for my bachelor’s degree and was the largest game project I had undertaken up to that point. Through the size of the project and my role as the sole lead coder, I began to consciously engage with code architecture and ‘clean code’ principles.
