Cell Culture

Date: 2021
Engine: Godot
Genre: Cellular Automaton
“Cell Culture” was created in Franken Jam 2021 and its rules are strongly inspired by Conway’s game of Life. Two different cell cultures face each other and try to gain the upper hand through cell division. The rules for how quickly and in which directions the cells spread are similar to the rules of Conway’s Game of Life, but here they are applied to a hexagonal grid instead of a square grid. The rules can also be adapted and manipulated by the players. Only with the right tactics can you grow faster than your opponent’s cells.

I took on the role of 3D artist for this project. I had already acquired a certain amount of knowledge in the field of 3D modeling in previous game jams and had also gained experience in using Blender. The modeling of the 3D objects went quite well, and it should be noted that the models were really simple.
In addition to creating the 3D models, I also took care of the individual shaders. The translucency and refraction effects were particularly challenging, especially because I had rarely worked with shader code before. Despite these challenges, I’m quite happy with the overall visual quality of the models, shaders and the game as a whole, especially considering that this was a 48-hour game jam.
